Lesson 3 Flashcards

1
Q

What is bluffing?

A

Bluffing is when I bet with a hand such that if my opponent folds, he probably had more equity than my hand.

It’s one of the two self-sufficient reasons to bet (the other one is value)..

Q

How does SDV affect the bluffing category?

A

If I have too much SDV then I can’t bluff that hand. While it can’t be +EV to bluff this hand, checking has more EV with those hands.

Q

CO vs BB SRP on A4485ssdhc with KJcc, action was checked through

should i bluff B75 it at the river?

A

No, despite getting lots of folds, and bluffing some hands like 77, this hand has too much SDV so the EV of checking back is higher.

Q

as BB vs CO,should I probe the turn on a A44ssd X/X 8h turn, with 96hh?

A

No, I’m in an unfavorable world so I need to be choosy with my bluffs. I’ll need to have either nut potential or a positive blocker to even consider bluffing.

Q

as CO vs BB SRP, A44ccd X/B33/C flop, turn 8h, what category of a bluff will QThh be?

A

It’s an optional bluff. Whatever I do I’m entitled to a small portion of the pot, but that doesn’t mean I have to check. Don’t fall into the comfort blanket fallacy.

Q

as CO vs BB SRP, A44ccd X/X flop, turn 8h, what category of a bluff will Q7dd be?

A

Optional bluff - I can bluff either on the turn or on the river.

If I bluff on the turn, I let him realize less equity, but then i lose more to his strong cards

Bluffing either the turn or river is mandatory.

Q

Explain the “comfort blanket” fallacy

A

“I would rather have a X hand to bluff with here than this current hand because the feeling of bluffing with that hand is better than bluffing with air”.

Always compare the actions that I can take with my current hand, not actions that I would have taken with a different hand.

It’s like being in mcdonals and being served a meal, and refusing it because I prefer to be in a Michelin restaurant

Q

In what common spots do I have to bluff the river?

A

in both i have no SDV:

  1. He bet, I called, and then he checked (so my range got stronger than his range)
  2. i retained my range advantage (a good runout or i checked it to the river)

Q

In what common spots before the river is it mandatory to bluff?

A
  1. big range advantage on the flop
  2. a favorable turn card for my range
  3. Betting OOP with no SDV but a promising draw
17
Q

as CO vs BB SRP,
flop A44ssd X/X
turn 8h X/X
river Jc X

What should I do as CO and why?

A

I have to bluff because I don’t have SDV and I retained range advantage by checking

18
Q

as BB vs CO, SRP, flop 762ssc X/B75/C

Turn 2s X/X

river Th and I have 85dd

A

Mandatory bluff: I have no SDV and my opponent bet flop (polarizing) and then checked turn (capping his range). I’m in a favorable world with no SDV.

19
Q

as CO vs BB SRP
flop 762ssc X/B75/C
turn Ah and I have J8cc

A

Optional bluff - A isn’t an amazing card for my range and BB did call my flop bet so i think I’m in a neutral world.

20
Q

as BB vs CO SRP,
flop comes 762ssc X/X
turn Qd

I have A8hh

A

Can’t bet for multiple reasons:

  1. I have some SDV
  2. I’m in an unfavorable world with no nuts potential.
