lesson 27 Flashcards
WHAT DOES REMEMBER TO DRINK COLD BEVERAGES STAND FOR?
COMPONENTS OF THE BRACHIAL PLEXUS
ROOTS
TRUNKS
DIVISIONS
CORDS
BRANCHES
what are the roots of the brachial plexus?
spinal nerves c5-t1
- continuation of the anterior rami that form the BP
What is the importance of C8 spinal nerve
switches the nerves to inferior exit instead of superior to location of ID
changes orientation
what are the three trunks located in the brachial plexus?
What are the divisions of the anterior and posterior divisions of trunks?
We have anterior and posterior divisions of trunks
They pass through the clavicle
- they exit and enter the axilla through the cervico-axillary canal (apex of axilla)
what are the cords of the brachial plexus?
convergence or continuation of anterior divisions or posterior divisions
what are the three cords? and what converged?
lateral cord (C5-C7)
convergence of: anterior divisions of superior and middle trunks
medial cord: (C8-T1)
continuation of: anterior division of the inferior trunk
posterior cord: (c5-t1)
Convergence of: posterior divisions of all trunks
The cords are all found in the infraclavicular region
the axillary artery is what tells the reference and the names of the other cords
what are the branches of the brachial plexus?
Branches: predominantlu multi-segmental, peripheral nerves that arise from the cords (infraclavicular region) or roots/trunks (supraclavicular region)
What are the different branches found in the infraclavicular region or the lateral cord?
arising from the lateral cord:
we have :
- musculocutaneous nerve
- anterior (flexor) compartment of the arm
- c5-c7
lateral root of the median nerve
- converges with the medial root of the median nerve to form the medial nerve
- c5-c7
what are the different branches that come from the infraclavicular region arising from the medial cord?
the medial root of the median nerve:
- converges with the lateral root of the median nerve t form the median nerve
ulnar nerve:
-anterior (flexor) compartment of the forearm and hand
- c8-T1
what is this M consist of and we should know?
what the branches that arise from the posterior cord?
There is something different from what arises from these cords; one cord precisely doesn’t follow the rule that:
These structures must contain the same fibres as the cords they were raised from
AXILLARY nerve :
- it only contains C5-C6 spinal nerve fibres
it innervates :
Deltoid and teres minor
RADIAL NERVE:
- travels posterior to get to the extensor compartments of the arm, forearm, posterior aspect of the hand
- C5-T1 spinal fibers
What branches arise from the roots in the supraclavicular region?
DORSAL SCAPULAR NERVE:
-innervates: levator scapulae, rhomboid major, rhomboid minor
- C5 spinal nerve fibers
LONG THORACIC NERVE:
-Innervates serratus anterior
- C5-C7
true or false no branches arise from the divisions of the brachial plexus?
true
what branches arise from the trunks of the supraclavicular region?
It only arises from the superior trunk, not the medial or inferior.
Suprascapular nerve:
- innervates supraspimnaturs, infraspinatus
- c5-c6
Nerve to subclavius :
-subclavius
-C5-C6
what branches arise from the lateral cord of the supraclavicular region?
lateral pectoral nerve:
-pectroalis major, pectoralis minor
-c5-c7 fiber
what branches arise form the medial cord?
medial pectoral nerve
- pectoralis major, pectroalis minor
-C8-T1
The medial cutaneous nerve of the arm
medial cutaneous nerve fo the forearm
- skin overlying medial arm/forearm
- C8-T1
note:
Don’t be confused by positioning lateral is more medial it is named lateral nerve because it arise from the lateral cord
