Lesson 2.3 Internal Forces Shaping The Earth Flashcards
Where do plate tectonics begin?
The lithosphere
What do tectonic plates ride upon to move?
Heated rock moving upward, cooling then moving downward
4 ways plate tectonics move
- Spreading or moving apart
- Subduction or diving another plate
- Collision or crashing into another
- Sliding past each other
3 types of boundaries of playe movement?
Divergent- plates move apart
Convergent- plates collide
Transform- plates slide past each other
When do faults occur?
When the rock isn’t flexible and cracks under the pressure exerted by plate movement
Where do plates move past each other?
The fault line
Define earthquake
As the plates grind or slip past each other at a fault, the earth shakes or trembles
What do seismographs do?
Measure the size of waves created by earthquakes
What is the focus?
The location in the earth where earthquakes begin
What is the epicenter,
The point directly above the focus on earth’s surface
What does an earthquake do
Causes aftershocks and releases energy in the form of motion
What doee the richer scale do
Uses information from seismographs to determine the relative strength 9f the earthquake
Define tsunami
Giant wave that can travel from the epicenter of a quake of speeds up to 450 mph
Where are most volcanoes found?
Along tectonic plate boundaries
Where is the ring of fire found
In the pacific ocean
