Lesson 1.1 Five Themes Of Geography Flashcards
What is geography?
The study of the distribution and interaction of physical and human features on the earth
Methods of geography?
Maps (visual representation of a portion of the earth)
Graphs, charts, tables
Models
What is absolute location?
The exact place on Earth where a geographic feature is found. To find absolute location, you need to FIND THE POINT WHERE LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE CROSS.
What is relative location?
A place in comparison to other places around it
How a place is related to its surrounding environment
What are latitude lines?
To locate places NORTH or SOUTH, geographers use a set of imaginary lines that run parallel to the equator.
What are longitude lines?
Longitude lines are lines that go around the earth and over the poles. They mark positions in the EAST and WEST hemispheres.
What is place?
Place includes physical features and cultural characteristics of a location
ex: climate, vegetation, and landforms
What is region?
Region is an area of the Earth’s surface with similar characteristics regions have more than one characteristic that unifies them
Ex: physical, political, economic, or cultural characteristics
What are formal regions?
Formal regions are defined by limited number of related characteristics. Regions are generally defined by Continental area and similar cultural styles
What are functional regions?
Functional regions are organized around a set of interactions and connections between places. A functional region is characterized by a central place and links to the central place.
Ex: A highway and its suburbs
What are perceptual regions?
Perceptual regions are regions in which people perceive, or see, characteristics of that region the same way. However the characteristics may not be the same for all people and they sometimes differ on how that region is defined
What is human environment interaction?
People learn to use what the environment offers and change it to meet their needs. They also learn to live with aspects of the environment they can’t change, like climate.
What is movement?
Movement is how people goods and ideas move from place to place. Geographers analyze Movement by looking at the linear, time, and psychological distance.
What is linear distance?
Linear distance is how far across the earth a person, idea, or product travels. Physical geography can affect linear distance by forcing a shift in route to avoid impassable lands or water.
What is time distance?
Time distance is the amount of time for a person, idea, or product to travel. Modern inventions, like planes and cars, have shortened time distance.
