Lesson 2.2 Bodies Of Water And Landforms Flashcards
How much salt water covers our planet
Saltwater covers about 71% of our planet
How much does salt water cover the northern and southern hemispheres
Saltwater covers a little more than 60% of the Northern Hemisphere and about 81% of the southern hemisphere
How is the ocean divided
Into four parts: the Atlantic ocean, the Pacific ocean, the Indian ocean, and the Arctic Ocean.
What are the three basic motions that ocean water is circulated
Current- act like rivers flowing through the ocean
Waves- swells/ridges made by wind
Tides- rises/falls of ocean create by gravitational pull of moon and sun
What does emotion of the ocean help do
Distribute heat on the planet
What is a hydrologic cycle?
A continuous circulation of water between the atmosphere, the oceans, and the earth.
How much fresh water do Lakes hold?
More than 95% of All Earth’s fresh water supply
How are saltwater Lakes created
When creeks and rivers carry salt into a lake and there’s no Outlet to carry the salt away
What is a drainage basin
An area drained by a major river and its tributaries, feeding into larger and larger one
What is groundwater
The water held in pores of The Rock
What is the water table
Level at which the rock is saturated marks the rim of the water table
What is a continental shelf
The Earth’s surface from the edge of a continents of the deep part of the ocean
What is relief?
Difference in elevation of a landform from its lowest point to its highest point
What are the four categories of relief
Mountains Hills Plains and plateaus
What is topography
The combination of the surface shape and composition of the landforms and their distribution in the region
