Lesson 1.2 Geographers Tools Flashcards
What do maps show?
Map show the location of places landforms and bodies of water and where they are in relation to other parts of the Earth
What are maps?
Maps are two dimensional graphic representations are selected parts of the Earth’s surface Distortion occurs as the earth’s surface is flattened to create the map
What does a cartographer do?
Reduces distortion
What is map projection?
A way of drawing the Earth’s surface that reduces Distortion caused by representing a round Earth on flat paper
What does a topographic map show
A representation of natural and man-made features on Earth
What do thematic Maps show?
Emphasize specific types of information
Ex: climate or population density
What are navigational maps?
Pilots and sailors use navigational Maps
What does surveying do?
What is observed, measured, and recorded from a specific area to be converted to gray image which is then used by cartographers to construct Maps
What do satellites do?
Geographers rely heavily on satellites to provide Geographic data
What is geographic information (GIS)
Stores information about the world in a digital database and has the ability to combine information from a variety of sources and display it in ways it allowed the user to visualize the use of space in different ways
What is global positioning system (GPS)
Uses 30 satellites to beam information to Earth including the exact position, longitude, latitude, altitude, and time to help geographers visualize and display information for analysis
What does a small scale show?
A small scale map shows a large area but without much detail. A small scale is used to see relative location in a region or between regions.
What does a large scale map show?
A large scale map shows a small area with much more detail. A large scale is used to see relative location within a region.
Latitude lines
Latitude lines are also called parallels because they run parallel to the equator North 90° and South 90°
Longitude lines
Longitude lines are also called meridians because like the prime meridian, they run from pole to pole. 180° in West and 180° in East
