Q

What does surveying do?

A

What is observed, measured, and recorded from a specific area to be converted to gray image which is then used by cartographers to construct Maps

Q

What is geographic information (GIS)

A

Stores information about the world in a digital database and has the ability to combine information from a variety of sources and display it in ways it allowed the user to visualize the use of space in different ways

Q

What is global positioning system (GPS)

A

Uses 30 satellites to beam information to Earth including the exact position, longitude, latitude, altitude, and time to help geographers visualize and display information for analysis

Q

What does a small scale show?

A

A small scale map shows a large area but without much detail. A small scale is used to see relative location in a region or between regions.

Q

Latitude lines

A

Latitude lines are also called parallels because they run parallel to the equator North 90° and South 90°

Q

Longitude lines

A

Longitude lines are also called meridians because like the prime meridian, they run from pole to pole. 180° in West and 180° in East

Q

What is a planar (azimuthal) projection?

A

A projection on a flat surface. The azimuthal projection shows the Earth so that a line from the central point to any other point on the map gives the shortest distance between the two points. Size and shape are distorted.

17
Q

What are conical projections?

A

A projection onto a cone that shows shape fairly accurately but it distorts land masses at the edges of the map. They are often used to show landmasses that extend over large areas going EAST and WEST

18
Q

What are compromise projections?

A

A projection onto a cylinder that shows the entire Earth on one map

19
Q

What are the three types of compromise projections?

A

Mercator- the shapes of the continents are distorted at the poles and somewhat compressed near the equator

20
Q

What are the three types of compromise projections?

A

Homolosine- an interrupted a map because the oceans are divided this projection shows the accurate shapes and sizes of the landmasses the distance on the map are not correct

21
Q

What are three types of compromise projections?

A

Robinson- shows the entire Earth with nearly the truth sizes and shapes of the continents and oceans however the shapes of the landforms near the poles appear flat
