lesson 2 Cranial Bones; Facial Bones Flashcards
bones of cranium
frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital, sphenoid, ethmoid
bones of facial
mandible, maxilla, zygomatic, nasal (lacrimal, palatine, inferior nasal concha, vomer)
oval; form varies from person to person because of differences in width and length
geometric form (normal)
external cranial bones
frontal, occipital, parietal, temporal
anterior third of cranium; forms forehead and anterior portion of roof of skull
frontal
part of face above eyes
vertical surface
vertex; topmost part of head
horizontal surface
rounded prominences on either side of median line just inferior of frontal bone; vary in size and prominence among people
frontal eminence
superior rim of eye sockets
supraorbital margins
inferior part of forehead just superior to median ends of eye brows
superciliary arches
between superciliary arches and inferior part of frontal bone; lies at root of nose; lateral margins form a part of orbital margins and converge medially descend to nasal bones
glabella
lowest part of the back and base of cranium; forms cradle for brain
occipital bone
prominence at center of external surface of occipital bone
occipital protuberance
opening in occipital bone which spinal cord passes
foramen magnum
superior portion of sides and back of cranium as well as posterior 2/3rds of roof of cranium
parietal bones
mark convexity on outer surface of parietal bones
parietal eminences
marks widest part of cranium
parietal eminences
inferior portion of sides in base or cranium, inferior to paretial bones and anterior to occipital bone
temporal bones
concave surface of head that overlies the temporal bone
temporal cavity
vertical portion of temporal bone; comprises anterior and superior part of bone; scale like/thin/transluscent
squama
actual passage to hearing organ
external auditory meatus
