Lesson 2 Flashcards
The epithelial tissues cover external body surfaces
Provide lining of the internal surfaces
Cells are arranged very closely with little intercellular substance between
Arranged as sheets covering or lining surfaces as masses of cells as in glands
- CATEGORIES
o Simple epithelium
o Stratified epithelium
o Glandular or pyramidal epithelium
EPITHELIAL TISSUES
CLASSIFICATION OF EPITHELIAL TISSUES
NUMBER OF CELL LAYER
EXOCRINE
MORPHOLOGICAL STRUCTURE (SHAPE)
ENDOCRINE
Composed on one layer of cells all attached to the basement membrane
* Simple squamous epithelium
o Usually seen in the lining of vessels (endothelium), or in the lining of cavities (mesothelium) such as pericardium.
SIMPLE EPITHELIUM
o May be either ciliated or non-ciliated
o All cells adhere to the basal lamina, but not all cells reach the surface.
o Nucleus are not uniform
o Presence of cilia
o Lining of respiratory tract, reproductive tract
- Pseudostratified columnar epithelium
Composed of more than one layer of cells
Only the basal cells are attached to the basement membrane
STRATEFIED EPITHELIUM
Serous glandular epithelium - pancreas, parotid glands
* Acinus – rounded secretory unit
* Usually seen in salivary grands
* SALIVARY GLANDS
o PAROTID - Serous Acinus
o SUBLINGUAL - Under the tongue, mucous acinus
o SUBMANDIBULAR - Serous and Mucous
Serous – secretes proteins in an isotonic watery fluid, dark
Mucous – secretes mucin (lubricant), light bubble-like
GLANDULAR OR PYRAMIDAL EPITHELIUM
