lesson 18 - energy & nutrient acquisition I Flashcards
why is surface area to volume ratio important?
there is more space for diffusion to occur
autotrophs
organism gets carbon from non-living things
heterotrophs
organism gets carbon from other living things
photo
light energy
chemo
gets energetic from chemical reactions
photo heterotroph
light energy, organic carbon
chemo heterotroph
uses chemical for energy and gets carbon from other living things
what do chloroplasts do?
convert light to chemical energy
% of solar energy used by life?
5%
what light to plants use?
40% of sunlight (visible spectrum)
what is heliotropism?
plants track the sun
what is phototropism?
plants grow towards the sun
how do fungi get nutrients?
secrete enzymes, absorb nutrients
what are hyphae?
filaments that increase surface area
what is mycelium
a network of hyphae for absorption
what is haustoria?
fungal structures that steal nutrients
what are mycorrhizae?
The fungus helps the plant by absorbing water and nutrients (like phosphorus) from the soil.
In return, the plant gives the fungus some of the sugar it makes from the sun through photosynthesis
fungi-plant symbiosis
what are the 4 digestion steps?
ingest, digest, absorb, eliminate
what are the 4 feeding types?
filter, substrate, fluid, bulk
