Lesson 17 Definitions Flashcards
alternation of generations
includes diploid (sporophyte) generation and a haploid (gametophyte) generation
sporophyte
mitosis occurs in this generation
gametophyte
flowers on angiosperms (miosis happens in this generation)
archegonium
the female sex organ in mosses, liverworts, ferns, and most conifers.
ovule
plant structure that develops into a seed when fertilized
ovary
part of the female reproductive organ of the flower or gynoecium. Specifically, it is the part of the pistil which holds the ovule(s) and is located above or below or at the point of connection with the base of the petals and sepals.
anther
the part of a stamen that contains the pollen.
filament
one of the male reproductive parts of the plant. When a flower opens, the filaments can be seen inside, thrusting up like stems within the flower itself. A filament is topped by the anther. Together the anther and filament make up the flower’s stamen.
stigma
a specially adapted portion of the pistil modified for the reception of pollen. It may be feathery and branched or elongated, as in such wind-pollinated flowers as those of the grasses, or it may be compact and have a sticky surface.
style
a long, slender stalk that connects the stigma and the ovary
megaspore
a type of spore that is present in heterosporous plants
microspore
the smaller spore present in heterosporous plants
radicle
the first organ to appear when a seed germinates. It grows downward into the soil, anchoring the seedling. In gymnosperms and dicotyledons (angiosperms with two seed leaves), the radicle becomes a taproot.
hypocotyl
the part of the stem of an embryo plant beneath the stalks of the seed leaves or cotyledons and directly above the root.
vegetative reproductions
any form of asexual reproduction occurring in plants in which a new plant grows from a fragment of the parent plant or a specialized reproductive structure.
phototropism
movement or growth in response to direction, intnsity, and color of light
geotropism
movement or growth in response to gravity.
thigmotropism
movement or growth in response to touch
