Lesson 16 Definitions Flashcards
phloem
the vascular tissue in plants that conducts sugars and other metabolic products downward from the leaves.
transpiration
the exhalation of water vapor through the stomata
cohesion-tension theory
a theory of intermolecular attraction that explains the process of water flow upwards (against the force of gravity) through the xylem of plants
stomata
minute pores in the epidermis of the leaf or stem of a plant, forming a slit of variable width which allows movement of gases in and out of the intercellular spaces
xylem
the vascular tissue in plants that conducts water and dissolved nutrients upward from the root and also helps to form the woody element in the stem.
pistil
the female organs of a flower, comprising the stigma, style, and ovary.
stamen
the male fertilizing organ of a flower, typically consisting of a pollen-containing anther and a filament.
tracheophytes
a large group of plants that are defined as land plants with lignified tissues for conducting water and minerals throughout the plant. They also have a specialized non-lignified tissue to conduct products of photosynthesis.
