Lesson 11: Unsustainable Diets Flashcards
What is the group of the hedgehogs?
know one big thing & focus on one central issue
What is the group of the foxes?
know many things, consider issues to be multi-faceted and linked to other issues & see wicked problems
What is IPAT?
Impact on the land is a consequence of Population growth, Affluence and Technology
How do we increase bioavailability of energy-yielding nutrients?
By having formidable amounts of mastication
How are the nutrients stored in plant biomass removed from the land?
When fruits get harvested by humans or animals
How did affluence impact food?
As affluence increased, red meat and sugar consumption increased, which correlated with a rise in cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes
How have technological advancements affected our environment and food?
- devastating impacts on the environment
- turning nitrogen into reactive forms like ammonia and nitrogen for fertilizers
- fertilizer runs off from agricultural fields and goes into coastal waters
How does nitrogen impact algae?
The nitrogen rich water that has run off agricultural fields leads to exponential growth of aquatic microorganisms like algae.
What do thick covers of algal blooms cause?
Dissolved oxygen of water below to become exhausted
What are zones of depleted oxygen called?
Dead zones
What happens in these zones?
Fish and amphibians suffocate
What should we do to reduce occurrence of dead zones?
Establish a cap on nitrogen released to 25% of it’s current value
What do we have to consider for a food item to be more or less sustainable?
How it’s grown and where it’s grown
What is virtual water?
the amount of water that was used to grow a particular food
How is virtual water expressed?
as kilocalories produced per cubic meter of water used
