Lesson 11 - Magnets Flashcards
What is the largest magnet in the world?
Earths core
What do sharks have to do with magnets?
Sharks can detect magnetic fields, and it helps them navigate away from fishers.
What is a magnet?
A magnet is a material that has a magnet force with a north and South Pole.
What is a magnet material?
A magnet material is something that is attracted to a magnet.
What are the 3 naturally occurring magnets?
Nickel, cobalt and iron
A magnet force is the strongest near the centre. True or false?
False - it is strongest near its poles.
How does a magnet attract/repel things?
It releases a force around its magnetic field.
What are domains?
Inside magnets and magnetic materials are groups of atoms called domains.
What happens if all domains line up?
If all domains line up and face one direction, the material will then act as a magnet.
What happens if you split a magnet in half?
It will create smaller magnets.
True or false. Opposite poles repel each other.
False
True or false. Aluminium powder is magnetic.
False
True or false. Steel, cobalt, iron and nickel are magnetic
True
What is induction magnetism?
It is when a magnetic material touches a non-magnetic material and then it becomes magnetic itself.
