derived from the Greek term “demokratos”; demos: “the people”; kratia: “rule”; government by the many rather than small elite group; direct democracy birthed within Greek city-states

derived from the Latin term “res publica”; res: “thing”; publicus: “public”; government that belongs to the people; checks and balances system of government has roots in Rome

established in 1215 by English nobles forcing King John to acknowledge their rights; all English people saw as guarantee of limited government protecting their rights

humanity is trapped in “state of nature” without any order and protection; no decent life possible; condition could be remedied if people enter into “social contract”
