Why did teodoro Agoncillo said there was no PH history before 1872
Before 1872, majority of the Filipinos did not see themselves as Filipinos. There was no widespread belief that there was no Filipino identity.
What is the secularization movement in the 1860s and what is its importance to PH history
The Church is one of the most powerful and influential entity back in the 18 hundreds. This was prone to insurmountable amount of abuses of the Spanish friars to the natives.
Hence, the secularization movement aimed to transfer the administration of parishes from the regular priests to the secular priests. This was part of a broader effort to reduce the power of the religious orders and increase the influence of native clergy. This also contributed to the growing sense of Filipino identity and would lead later to the rise of resistance against the Spanish colonial
What are the implications of the royal decree that states that there should be a public education in the PH
-Mestizos and indos could finally have access to education too
-opened a lot of opportunities to the Filipinos
-plus the opening to world trade allowed some filipinos to get rich and get access to liberal ideas

-Gobernador General Rafael Izquierdo was appointed by the monarchist and revoke the tributo and Polo y servicio exemption of the native soldiers.

-there was no trial
-was supposed to be a warning to filipinos who had plans to uprise against the spanish
-became a wake up call to Filipinos that they are treated as inherently inferior or unequal
-It** led to the birth of a new generation of Filipinos with a realized identity**. Filipinos began to imagine a world/society that they are their own community.

What did it take in order for the Propaganda movement to ignite
Some wealthy families were able to send their kids to europe and realized some things:
-The Colonial spain is treating them differently. they realized that this is not how its supposed to be what it means to be a country
(e.g. the press is so free)

-Promote democracy
-Have equal rights for Filipino and Spanish
-Assimilation - we should be a province of spain so that we could have equal rights and representation. For example, this would mean that a Filipino would have a seat in the Spanish government and be the voice for the Filipinos

- Tripartite view - light darkness light (precolonial, colonial and post colonial)
- prove Filipino’s worth intelligence and skill

What is the La Solidaridad
was a bi-weekly newspaper and the official publication of the Propaganda Movement. It was established in Spain on February 15, 1889, by Filipino reformists and intellectuals who were advocating for political and social reforms in the Philippines under Spanish colonial rule

Why the Filipinos did not just ask for reforms instead of revolution
A more radical path was shortly initiated, but the reformists had articulated
and circulated the foundational ideas of the dominant stream of Filipino na-
tionalism. Later asked why the Filipinos rose against Spain, Apolinario
Mabini explained:
The reason can be condensed into the following: the popular desire to have a
government which will assure the Filipinos the freedom of thought, conscience,
and association; the right to life, the inviolability of the home and the freedom
of communication; a popular assembly that will make the laws of the country
and decide the kinds of taxation; equality of opportunity to hold public offices
and equality in the share of public benefits; respect for law and property; and the
progressive development of the country by modern methods.16
