Lesion Progression Flashcards
what is a biofilm?
a communtiy of micro organisms attached to a surface
what is the pellicle formed from?
the saliva
what is present at the start and end of microbial succession? how long does this take?
streptococci to actinomyces
1-14 days
properties of cariogenic bacteria?
acidogenic - sugars to lactic acid
aciduric - thrive at a low pH
what is the specific plaque hypothesis?
there are approx 300 species of microorganisms - only a specific number are involved in the carious process
what is the non specific plaque hypothesis?
caries results from the overall activity of the microorganisms - ensure all plaque removed
what is the ecological plaque hypothesis?
plaque can accumulate at all sites
microflora can change depending on environment
remove plaque from susceptible areas and reduce sugar intake
at what pH is enamel threatened?
5.5
ways to arrest a lesion?
improved oh
reduce sugar
fluoride
what are the two zones of dentine caries?
inner - affected
outer - infected
