Leopold's maneuvers Flashcards
First…which way is the examiner facing and where are the examiner’s hands
Facing maternal head
Fingers of both hands curved around the fundus.
First…..Which fetal part is in the fundus if something round and firm is in the fundus
head…which means the fetal breech is presenting
First….Which fetal part is in the fundus if I wiggle a small, firm object in the fundus and it causes the whole body to move,,,
could be the baby’s behind…which means the head is presenting
First….which fetal part is in the fundus if nothing is in the fundus
fetus is likely lying transversely in the maternal abdomen
Second…..Which way is the examiner facing and where are the examiner’s hands
Facing maternal head
Right hand on one side of the abdomen to stabilize and find either back or small parts on the opposite side with left hand then switch hands
Second….Where is the back
if the smooth part is on the maternal left and the small parts on the maternal right, the fetus is likely to be lying longitudinally in the maternal abdomen
Third…..which way is the examiner facing and were are the examiner’s hands
Facing maternal head
C-shaped grip with hand above symphysis to grasp presenting part and determine if its hard or soft, moveable or not
Third….Which part is presenting if the presenting fetal part is firm, round and moves side to side without moving the whole fetal body
it probably the head….not engaged
Third….if I can’t get my hand between the presenting part and the brim of the maternal pelvis
The presenting part is probaply engaged.
Fourth….which way is the examiner facing and were are the hands
Facing maternal feet
Both hands on lower, lateral abdomen, with fingers pointed down into the pelvis
Fourth….Is the presenting part engaged…
which side is the cephalic prominence at
If the presenting part is the head, is the head flexed
If one of my hands runs into a prominence on the presenting fetal head, the fetal head might be extended (which will hopefully correct itself before labor)
