Describe this picture and what are the causes?
- Painful, subcutaneous nodules on both pretibial (anterior leg) surfaces
Findings suggest: Erythema Nodosum
(Less common on other areas of the skin)
Caused by:
* Idiopathic (most common)
* Infection (such as: Streptococcocal pharyngitis, Histoplasmosis, Coccidiomycosis, TB, Leprosy)
* Autoimmune diseases (such as: Sarcoidosis,Crohn’s disease,Ulcerative colitis,Behcet syndrome)
* Drugs (such as: Oral contraceptives, Sulfonamides, Iodide)
* Pregnancy
* Malignancy
Describe this picture and what is it associated with?
Right: an ulcer with a purple and undermined edge
Left: a small pustule
Findings suggest: Pyoderma gangrenosum
Associated with:
* Rheumatoid arthritis
* Irritable bowel disease (IBD)
* Trauma
Note: Pyoderma gangrenosum is a Neutrophilic Dematosis. It starts out as a small pustule, red bump or blood bister (often misinterpreted as a insect bite), then breaks down into an ulcer. They are very painful
