What must a suitable environment for a cat include?

A

What must be done to ensure cats are protected from pain, suffering, injury, and disease?

A

A cat must remain in its assigned unit unless moved to an isolation unit or to a holding cat unit
Where any other activity involving animals is undertaken on the premises, the cattery must be kept separate from the area in which the activity is taking place
All equipment must be cleaned and disinfected before the cat is introduced into the cat unit
A preventative healthcare plan agreed with the veterinarian with whom the licence holder has registered under paragraph 9(8) of Schedule 2 must be implemented
A holding cat unit must only be used in emergencies and must not be used for longer then necessary
In any event, the cat must not stay in the holding unit for longer then 12 hours in a 24-hour period

What must be done to ensure the normal behaviour of a cat?

A

There must be an area within the cat unit where the cat is unable to see other cats and people outside the cat unit if it so chooses
Each cat unit must have a facility for scratching
The facility or surface used for scratching must be disinfected between uses by different cats or disposed of
All cats must be provided with toys or feeding enrichment unless advice from a veterinarian suggests otherwise
All toys and enrichment must be checked daily to ensure they remain safe, and cleaned and disinfected regularly

What must a suitable environment for a dog include?

A

Dogs within the premises must be prevented from coming into contact with animals from outside the premises
The sleeping area must be free from draughts, provide the dog with sufficient space for it to sit, stand at full height, lie down fully stretched out, wag its tail, walk, and turn around without touching another dog or the walls, have a floor area with at least twice the area required for the dog to lie flat
If the kennel unit was built before the Animal Welfare (Licencing of Activities Relating to Animals) (England) Regulations 2018 came into place it must be at least 1.9 square metres
Each kennel unit must be clearly numbered and any information about the dog(s) in each kennel unit must be made available to all staff and any inspectors
Each dog must have constant access to its sleeping area which should have a clean, comfortable and warm area within its sleeping area where it can rest and sleep
Each exercise run must have a single, safe, secure and waterproof roof over a minimum of half of the total area
If a dog poses a health or welfare risk to other dogs it must be kept on its own in a kennel unit and if that kennel unit adjoins another kennel, any adjoining wall must be of full height and width to prevent to dog from coming into physical contact with another dog

All toys and enrichment must be checked daily to ensure they remain safe. They also have to be cleaned and disinfected weekly.
Each dog must be exercise at least once of day away from its kennel unit as appropriate for its age and health
Any dog with, on the advice of a veterinarian, cannot be exercise must be provided with alternative forms of mental stimulation
There must be an area within each kennel unit in which the dog can avoid seeing people and other dogs outside the kennel unit if it so chooses
