A licence under the Animal Welfare (Licencing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018 and its predecessor the Animal Boarding Establishments Act 1963
How long are licences valid for?
One, two, three years depending on the number of conditions met
Who will inspect the premises before and after granting a licence?
A council officer or a vet
What factors will stop a licence being granted?
If the applicant has been banned from keeping a pet shop or has been convicted of any other animal welfare offences
What are the consequences of not meeting the licencing requirements or running an establishment without a licence?
Fined up to £500 and/or imprisoned for up to three months
What are the conditions an applicant must ensure they meet in order to be granted a licence?
The animal is:
Kept in suitable accommodation
Given adequate food, drink and bedding
Visited and exercised regularly
Protected from pain, suffering, injury or disease
Protected in case of an emergency
Looked after by trained people
The applicant must:
Keep any records ready for an inspection
Display the licence number in any advertising
Display the licence clearly on the premises
Why are boarding establishments required to have insurance?
To ensure they are covered in the event of an incident
To avoid business, legal and financial implications from employees, customers or the wider public
What fire procedures must a boarding establishment have in place?
Risk assessment with all necessary control measures
Written emergency response plan on display and known to staff
