Sit in County Court for civil cases - hear law and facts, decide who wins
Sit in Crown Court for criminal cases - jury decides guilt, judge passes sentence

What do HCJ’s do?
Listen to facts of case and decide liability
Try cases are first instance
Hear evidence by witnesses, decide what the law is, make a decision

72 in QBD
17 in Chancery
18 in Family
What else will HCJ’s do?
Hear some appeals, mainly from County Court
What will jugdes in the QBD do?
Hear case stated appeals from the MC
Panel of 2 hear appeals only
Sit in Crown Court with jury for criminal trials
How many LJoA are there?
37
What do LJoA do?
Sit in criminal and civil divisions of CoA
Hear cases from HC and Crown Court
Hear second or further appeals from County Court cases
What is LJoA work concerned with?
Appeals
How many appeals do LJoA hear?
7000 applications for leave
3000 civil appeals
How many sit on a panel?
Usually 3 but a panel of 5 can also sit
What must lower courts do?
Follow decisions of the CoA
What do JoSC do?
Sit in SC
Hear both civil and criminal appeals on a POL
