Leg Flashcards
tibia
weightbearing bone
Fibula
slender lateral bone of the leg for muscle attachments
Interosseous membrane
connects fibula and tibia
Saphenous nerve
L3,L4 - branch of femoral
- supplies skin on the medial side of the leg
Sural nerve
Branches of tibial and common peroneal nerves
- formed by the junction of the medial sural and the communicating sural nerves
Superficial peroneal nerve
branch of common peroneal
- courses through lateral compartment of leg
- SUPPLIES SKIN OF anterolateral leg and dorsum of foot
Great saphenous vein
- begins at foot and ascends along MEDIAL side of leg and drains into the femoral vein
- CONTAINS VALVES
small saphenous vein
- begins at lateral side of foot and ascends along posterior medial leg
- DRAINS into popliteal vein posterior to knee joint
Curual fascia
(crural = leg)
- deep fascia of leg that is a continuation of fascia lata inferior to the knee
- ATTACHES to anterior and medial borders of tibia
- gives rise to septa and retinacula
Describe the anterior compartment of leg
DORSIFLEXORS of the ANKLE and EXTENSORS of the TOES
- Muscles pass anterior to the ankle join
NERVE SUPPLY = DEEP PERONEAL NERVE
BLOOD SUPPLY = ANTERIOR TIBIAL artery
compartment syndrome
- Caused by trauma to muscles of anterior compartment
- bleeding leads to increased pressure in the compartment and compression of other structures resulting in ISCHEMIA and nerve damage
Damage to peroneal nerve causes
paralysis of ALL ANTERIOR and LATERAL compartment muscles
Lateral compartment of the leg
EVERTER compartment
- bounded by fibula, anterior and posterior intermuscular septa and deep fascia
- NERVE = SUPERFICIAL PERONEAL NERVE
- ARTERY = PERONEAL ARTERY and ANTERIOR TIBIAL ARTERY BRANCHES
Posterior compartment of leg
- Plantar flexion and inversion of the foot
- LARGEST COMPARTMENT
- NERVE = TIBIAL
- ARTERY = POSTERIOR TIBIAL and PERONEAL ARTERIES
