Foot Joints Flashcards
Medial longitudinal arch
- Higher and more important than the lateral longitudinal arch
- consists of calcaneus, talus, navicular, three cuneiforms and three medial metatarsals
- arch is SUPPORTED by the spring (calcaneonavicular) ligament and the plantar aponeurosis
Lateral longitudinal arch
- flatter than medial arch
- during standing it rests on ground
- consists of calcaneus, cuboid, and the lateral two metatarsals
- arch is supported by long plantar ligament, short plantar ligament, and the plantar aponeurosis
Traverse arch
runs from side to side
- formed by three cuneiforms and bases of all metatarsals
subtaler joint (talocalcaneal)
- PLANE type synovial joint
- talus rests on the calcaneus
- PERMITS INVERSION and EVERSION
Tarsometatarsal joints
- PLANE type of synovial joint
- four anterior tarsal bones with the bases of the metatarsals
Intermetatarsal joints
- PLANE type of synovial joint
- Permits SLIGHT GLIDING movement
- articulation between bases of the metatarsals
Metatarsal phalangeal (MP) joints
- CONDYLOID type of synovial joints
- PERMITS flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, and rotation
- Articulation between the heads of the metatarsals and the bases of proximal phalanges
Interphalangeal (IP) joints
- Hinge type of synovial joint
- PERMITS FLEXION and EXTENSION
OTHER TARSAL JOINTS
- PLANE, GLIDING type synovial joints
- PERMIT INVERSION and EVERSION of foot
- between the small bones
Actions of the ankle joint
- DORSIFLEXION (35 degrees) - stable when dorsiflexed
- PLANTAR FLEXION (55 degrees) = UNSTABLE WHEN PLANTAR FLEXED
ANKLE JOINT (Talocrural)
GINGLYMUS or hinge type of synovial joint
- Trochlea of talus, tibia, fibula
Ankle Sprain
- Most frequently injured major joint
- occur due to TORN or DAMAGED ligaments
- usually INVERSION injury = causing damage to LATERAL LIGAMENT
Potts fracture
- When foot forcefully EVERTED
- often results in fracture of the MEDIAL and LATERAL MALLEOLI and fibula
Articular capsule
- surrounds ankle joint cavity
- thin anteriorly and posteriorly
- STRONG MEDIALLY and LATTERALLY where it is strengthened by DELTOID and LATERAL LIGAMENT
Deltoid ligament
- located on the medial side of the ankle joint with 4 distinct bands
- VERY STRONG TRIANGULAR BAND of LIGAMENTS
