Crime should be understood by considering how the following elements all work together
State, informal social control, offender, victim
State
The state is loosing the fight against crime
Loss of public confidence in the police
Consensus/ community style policing is more effective when the police are part of the community
Informal social control
the community is most effective in controlling crime as fears of stigmatisation and rejection reduce crime
Offender
Must explain crime in terms of root causes
But must not excuse criminals
Victim
Fear of crime influences behaviour
Evaluation
+ offers ideas about what can be done about crime
+ the strength of both realist approaches offers solutions
- marxists would criticise the focus on petty crimes and not corporate
- focuses on ethnic minorities so advocates racist stereotypes
