left realism Flashcards
What do left realists say about the rising crime rate?
rises in crime are so great they cannot be changes in reporting and recording. Truth in statistics.
What do left realists say about under and over policing?
crimes like prostitution and drug use can be helped through education and medical intervention.. These crimes get more attention than those that hurt other people like assault. These need more resources.
What are Lea and Youngs 3 causes of crime?
relative deprivation- ppl are in close proximity to what you don’t have , find illegal ways to get it. w/c people working in m/c restaurants for example.
subculture- join these as response to relative deprivation, engage in criminal behaviour
marginalisation- there is no organization to represent them, therefore they join crime and gain frustration.
What are Lea and Young’s 4 solutions to crime?
formal control (state/ police)- what is the law? style of policing, authoritarian vs communitarian.
informal control (public)- trust of police, condemnation of officers.
offenders- why have they don’t it?, criminogenic triangle
victim- relationship to offender, are victims heard
What does Young say about left realism and social policy?
solutions to deal with marginalisation and relative deprivation. Left realism has influenced social policy.
What are the 4 social policies’ that left realism has influenced?
police and crime commissioners
police recruitment policies
neighbourhood watch
labour’s new deal
ASBO’S
What were the police recruitment policies?
They aimed to recruit more BAME officers, however it has x been successful. The police should reflect the population, aiming to fix the relationship between the police and the public.
What were the police and crime commisioners?
helping tackle relationship between the public and the police, example of informal control
What is the neighbourhood watch?
informal community, regulating criminal activity by deferring to the police. Helping the lack of informal social control
What was the ASBO’S?
civil orders protecting people from the publics behaviour that causes harassment, social inequality (marginalisation, relative deprivation)
How can we criticise the left realist theory of crime?
doesn’t give enough status to the impact of capitalism
not everyone who experiences relative deprivation will commit crime
new labour government policy success? ASBO’S became seen as a badge of honour, new deal did not create new jobs.
