How can you teach resilience
- talk about own exps e.g. burnout, poetry comp
- teach what resilience is- not giving up- talk about priory assemblies and basketball
- give examples
- give time to reflect
Why is resilience important
- prevent burnout
- give motivation to keep going
- dentistry is difficult and requires resilience and important not to give up because it can get better
- teaches strength and reflection

What are the 4 pillars of medical ethics and how can you apply them to your career as a dentist
- beneficence- best interests of patient- always be kind and put patient first, be empathetic and offer them the best treatment ootions
- non-maleficence- dont harm- never harm my patient, dont be rude, dont give them harmful treatment options for own benefit
- justice- treat all my patients and colleagues equally, no biases, be fair
- autonomy- always respect patients rights and their choices
why Leeds?
course:

why dentistry and not medicine or nursing?
not med:
- dentistry regular checkups- form positive connections with patients
- more artistic
- get to restore people’s smiles which can improve wellbeing
not nursing:
- more opportunities to specialise- ortho, oral surgery
- can make final decisions & diagnose
- have more control over what you do in the mouth
if you noticed a colleague has turned up to work drunk, what would you do?
- take them to private area
- ask if they’re okay, ask if they have been drinking
- if no: ask again, point out any possible signs (breath, body language, speech)
- ask them why they have been drinking, offer help and support
- inform to go home- dont let them stay at work, harm to patients
- dont let them drive home- call cab, friend or relative
- report to practice manager or senior
- if they are being unco-operative, escalate, maybe ask security to escort out
who can you escalate concerns to within a practice?
- practice manager- in charge of the practice, if having issues with scheduling, admin issues
- clinical director- issues related to patient care, clinical practices
- local dental board- legal or ethical matters, violations of dental regulations
what are some struggles faced by dentists?
- unrealistic patient expectations- puts pressure on dentist, difficult to fulfil expectations
- burnout- stress and pressure
- workforce shortages
- pressure to meet specific targets and UDAs
- time management
- work/life balance
what are some issues preventing access to care for patients?
- NHS limited app availability- difficult to complete treatment in 1 app
- long waiting times and short apps
- rural areas- no nearby dental clinics
- cant afford dental treatment
