Lectures 1+2 Flashcards
epistemology
how one acquires new knowledge/ how do you know what you know
Tenacity:
a truth that a person claims to know intuitively “from the gut” without regard to evidence, logic, intellectual examination or facts. also known as truthiness
objectivity:
eliminating personal biases and opinions in research experiment
confirmation of findings:
repeat experiments to confirm their original results
experiments are used to determine:
cause and effect relationships
independent variable:
what the experimenter manipulates to determine its influence on behavior
dependent variable:
response of behavior that the experimenter measures
extraneous variables:
undesired variables that may operate to influence the dependent variable and thus invalidate an experiment
to the extent that extraneous variables are controlled, the cause and effect relationship between the ___ and ___ becomes more ___
independent variable and dependent variable; convincing
self correction:
public scrutiny, replication can change views of phenomena
