alternative research designs Flashcards
single case experimental designs involve
manipulation of IV and measurement of DV
why might we use single case experiments?
therapy, chemistry, unusual disorders, time consuming or expensive research
principles of single case experimental designs for IV:
operational definition, materials, procedure, actively manipulated rather than passively
principles of single case experimental designs for DV:
must be operationally defined, measured repeatedly (N=1)
principles of single case experimental designs for baseline:
measurement of pre-experimental behavior, contrast baseline performance after intervention, need multiple measurements to establish a trend
A-B design
A= pretest baseline measurement. B= posttest measurement after presence of IV. ads pretest-posttest design
A-B-A design
a= baseline - B- posttest - A= removal of IV. of change in DV is actually due to the IV then there should be a reversal
2 types of quasi experimental design
non equivalent group design and interrupted time series
non equivalent group design characteristics:
no randomization, can create a comparison group from those on a waiting list, problems with threats to internal validity
