Lecture Slides - Administration and Distribution (pg. 1, 8-16) Flashcards
____ is a chemical substance that dulls sensitivity to pain
narcotic
___ ___ ___ = specific/specialized body tissue that is affected by the chemical
site of action
sites of action are subjective to what?
the reason you are taking the drug
Administration methods will determine:
- How much = ___, ____, ______
- How quickly = ___, _____ _____, _____ ____
routes, enzymes, metabolism
systems, chemical properties, blood-brain barrier
Pros and cons of oral administration (3 of each)
Pros: convenient, least expensive, safest
Cons: slow absorption, delayed feedback, variability or absorption
what is insufflation and sublingual?
insufflation = snorting sublingual = under the tongue
Pros and cons of absorption?
pro: rapid
cons: irritation, variable absorption
pros and cons of inhalation?
pro: extremely fast absorption
cons: short lasting, respiratory irritation/damage, risk of brain damage (anoxia)
Pros and cons of subcutaneous parenteral administration?
Pro: easiest
Cons: slowest of parenteral because it relies on absorption, can also cause skin irritation/deterioration
Pros and cons of intramuscular parenteral drug administration?
Pros: requires less dexterity
Cons: risk of piercing a vein or getting an infection, also painful
Pros and cons of intravenous parenteral drug administration?
Pros: fastest absorption, immediate effects, accurate dosages
Cons: cannot be recalled/anuled, abrupt imbalance can be lethal, infections disease transmission
What is a potential factor of intravenous injection?
collapsed veins - begins to atrophy and withdraw, cuts off blood supply to the area
