Lecture- Part2 Flashcards
How can (social) psychologists help regarding topics like climate change?
Know attitudes, beliefs, and affective reactions to issues—> risk perception
When do we worry less?
When risk isn‘t personally affecting us Risk is far away in the future When the risk is abstract Risks that are caused by choices which also provide a benefit to us Over which we have some control
If we want toi make people aware of the risks, we should make communications which:
Make these risks local and personal Make the risks concrete Focus on the present Point out the trade-offs between risks and benefits Stress the element of personal control
PATH model
Applying social psychology from problem to solution
Step 1 of PATH model
Problem
- what exactly is the problem?
- Why is it a problem?
- For whom is this a problem?
- What are the main causes of the problem?
- What is the target group?
- What are the main aspects of the problem?—> applied problem?, social-psychological problem?, can it be solved?
Step4 of PATH model
You start thinking about possible solutions
Do not try to change all variables at once
Choose one variable which is most likely to lead to the biggest change in the outcome variable
Depending on which variables you choose, the solution is also different
Find social-psychological theories that help explain the problem
Social-psychological theories that could explain the problem (e.g. smoking)
Conditioning
Social cognitive theory
Theory of planned behavior
Conditioning
Making repeated associations between stimuli and behavior cause the behavior to become automatic
Social cognitive theory
Focuses among other things on the role of self-efficacy, social environment (peers, reward, punishment)
Theory of planned behavior
Focuses on attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control, which together predict the intention to perform a certain behavior
