lecture 9 - photosynthesis Flashcards
How many membranes does a chloroplast have?
three: inner, outer, and thylakoid membrane
Name the three compartments in the chloroplast.
intermembrane space, stroma, thylakoid space
Describe the role of the photosystems in the light reactions? (include the splitting of water in your description).
they are protein complexes that contain chlorophyll that absorb light energy and covert it into chemical energy by producing high energy electrons.
water is split and O2 is produced as well as ATP and NADPH
What are the inputs and outputs of the light reactions of photosynthesis?
input: light, water,
output: oxygen, ATP, NADPH
What are the inputs and outputs of the Calvin Cycle?
input: carbon dioxide
output: glucose
Briefly describe the Calvin Cycle.
Occurs in stroma; ATP ad NADPH produced in the light reactions are used to fix CO2 and produces a 6 carbon carbohydrate. The output is a 3 carbon sugar that is converted into glucose is produced.
Ancient ancestors of mitochondria and chloroplasts were free-living organisms. Give two pieces of evidence that support this statement.
both contain DNA and ribosomes and are able to make proteins
both have an outer and inner membrane
