lecture 13 - mitosis Flashcards
1
Q
Name the 5 stages of mitosis.
A
prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase & cytokinesis
2
Q
What occurs during prophase.
A
- chromosomes become visible
- cytoskeleton disassembles as the spindle begins to form
- centrioles migrate to opposite sides of poles
- bridge of microtubules is formed called the spindle apparatus
3
Q
What occurs during prometaphase.
A
- kinetochores attach to the centromere of the chromosomes
4
Q
What occurs during metaphase.
A
- all chromosomes ae aligned at the metaphase plate
5
Q
What occurs during anaphase.
A
- centromeres are degraded that hold chromatids together
- chromosomes are pulled by their kinetochores to opposite poles
6
Q
What occurs at telophase & cytokinesis.
A
- cleavage burrow forms
- chromosomes cluster at opposite poles and condense as the nuclear envelope reforms
- spindle apparatus disassembles
cytokinesis - completely separates daughter cell
7
Q
What is a karyotype?
A
an ordered visual representation of the chromosomes in a cell
8
Q
What is a duplicated chromosome.
A
two sister chromatids attached by a centromere
9
Q
During what phase is genetic material duplicated?
A
S phase
10
Q
During what phase are sister chromatids separated from one another?
A
anaphase
11
Q
During what phase does the mitotic spindle form?
A
prophase
