Lecture 9-control of ventilation Flashcards
define minute ventilation
breathing frequency*tidal volume (usually 5L/min)
Name 3 instances breathing rate would vary according to need
exercise, altitude, disease(compromising gas exchange)
Where is the respiratory centre located in the brain
Medulla Oblongata and Pons region (regulates medulla)
What does the ventral respiratory group contains and what does it do
Contains mixed neurones
some fire during inspiration,
some during expiration
What does the dorsal respiratory group contains and what does it do
Contains neurones
which fire during inspiration
what does the Pneuomotaxic centre do?
acts on the DRG to inhibit respiratory neurones
what does the Apneustic centre do?
acts of the DRG to stimulate respiratory neurones
What affect does the cortical part of the higher brain centre have on breathing
voluntary hyperventilation (alkalosis), voluntary breath holding ( hypoxia)
What affect does the hypothalamic part of the higher brain centre have on breathing
emotions- hyperventilation when angry ect.
sensory-hyperventilation when cold ect.
