Lecture 8 Ch 7 Flashcards
Uses tables, radio waves, or infrared signals/links computer in a limited geographic area
LAN
Links multiple computer systems and enables them to share data and resources
Networks
Uses long distance transmission media/links computer systems a few miles or thousands of miles/Internet is the largest WAN
WAN
Designed for a city/larger then LAN and smaller than WAN
MAN
Several LANs located in various locations on a college or business campus/smaller than a WAN/use devices such as switches, hubs, and routers
CAN
Network of an individual’s own personal devices, usually within a range of 32 feet, usually use wireless technology
PAN
Receives and transmits radio signals
Wireless access point (WAP)
Computer or device was software that manages network resources, such as files, emails, printers, databases
Server
What is the most common type of server
File server
Password-protected network controlled by the company/accessed only by employees
Intranet
Operates over the Internet/accessible by authorized users for quick access to corporate information/uses security, encrypted connections and special software
Virtual private network
What are the different types of LAN typologies
Bust typology. Star Typology. Bring typology.
Network typology
Physically designed for a land. Typology resolves contention – conflict that occurs when two or more computers on the network attempt to transfer the same time. Contention sometimes results in collisions – corruption of network data caused when two computers transfer at the same time
Bus typology
Practical for home or small office; one node transmits at a time; terminators see inside the end of the circuit; uses contention management – technique that specifies what happens when a collision occurs.
Star Typology
For official buildings, computer labs, and will WANs; easy to add users
