Lecture 5 Ch4 Flashcards
What are the five basic functions of an operating system
Starts the computer. Manages applications. Manages memories. Handles input and output device messages. Provides a user interface for communication.
But consists of all the programs that enable the computer and it’s peripheral devices to function smoothly
System software
What is a set of program that coordinates interactions of hardware components to each other and interaction between application software and computer hardware
Operating system (OS)
What loads the OS into RAM
Booting
Starting computer when it is not yet been turned on
Cold boot
Restarting a computer that is already on
Warm boot
Six steps of booting a system
Step 1 activate the BIOS and set up program. Step 2 initiate the power on self test. Step 3 load the operating system. Step 4 configure the system. Step 5 load system utilities. Step 6 authenticate a user.
To confirm that both the computer and it’s peripheral devices are working properly
Power on self test (POST)
What Are the types of interfaces
Graphic user interface (DOI). Menu – driver user interface. Command – line user interface.
What are the three categories of operating systems
Standalone operating systems are used by single users. Server operating systems are used in client/server network environments. Embedded operating systems are found on ROM Chips in portable or dedicated Devices
What are some more elaborate operating systems
Android has more holes supports CDMA (code division multiply access) and more screen resolutions. iPhone OS features – genius mixes, genius recommendations, Saved video from mail and MMS into camera roll, and save a new clip option
What is software programs that are essential to leave effective management of the computer system
System utilities (utility programs)
What decreases the size of files resulting in faster downloads
File compression utilities
