Lecture 8-Archaea and Bacteria Flashcards
What are the 3 individual structures of prokaryotes
Coccus (Sphere)
Bacillus (Rod)
Spiral
Purpose of cell wall?
Maintains shape, protects cell, prevents bursting in hypotonic environment
What is the capsule?
Built of polysaccharides or proteins, outside cell wall, protects host. Can attach through substrate or formation of colony
what is thePurpose of fimbriae and pili?
“Hair-like” appendages used for attachment.
How is the endospore formed?
- Chromosome duplicated
- Encased with essential components. (Enzymes, etc.)
- Water removed
- Lysis releases endospore.
Define transformation
Uptake of naked foreign DNA from environment
Define transduction
Viruses that infect bacteria transfer DNA from one host to another
Define conjugation
Direct transfer of DNA from one bacterium to another
What are F+ and F-?
F+= donor of F factor
F-= recipient of F factor
F factor is plasmid or chromosomal
