Lecture 17&18-Energy acquisition Flashcards
What are Autotrophs, Heterotrophs, Phototrophs, Chemotrophs?
Autotrophs: Get carbon from inorganic matter (non-living)
Heterotroph: Organic source of carbon
Phototroph: Obtain energy from light
Chemotroph: Obtain energy from chemical bonds
What is PAR?
Photosynthetically Available Radiation
Efficiency of Photosynthesis?
roughly 81%
Percentage of energy passed down food web?
roughly 10% of energy is passed to consumers
Four stages of processing food?
- Ingestion
- Digestion
- Absorption
- Elimination
4 forms of feeders?
- Suspension/Filter feeders (e.g. Whales)
- Substrate feeders: Live in their food source (e.g. a worm)
- Fluid feeders (e.g. Mosquito)
- Bulk feeders (e.g. Pythons)
Types of dentition?
Herbivores: Broad molars built for grinding
Carnivores: Large incisors and canines built to shred
Omnivores: In the middle
What is a gastrovascular cavity?
One opening for food and feces, in simple animals.
What is an alimentary canal?
Two openings for food movement, more common.
What are macro- and micronutrients?
Macronutrients: Required in large amount
Micronutrients: Required on small amount
How to obtain essential minerals?
Through diet
