Lecture 20-Gas exchange Flashcards
1
Q
What are tracheal systems?
A
A series of gradually smaller pipes that extend to almost every cell.
2
Q
What is counter-current flow?
A
Fluids flow in opposite directions
3
Q
Description of gill function
A
Blood flows opposite to water, Oxygen diffuses from high to low partial pressure (of oxygen) over lamella ,CO2 diffuses in opposite direction.
4
Q
Description of ventialtion
A
Lungs use positive and negative pressure to breathe.
Positive: Push air in
Negative: Pull air in
5
Q
How does stomata operate?
A
Guard cells accumulate K ions, water flows in and cells become turgid and open stomate. If there is a deficiency in K ions then water escapes cells and cells turn flaccid and close stomate.
