Lecture 14-Animals Flashcards
Methods of asexual reproduction?
- Budding
- Parthenogenesis
What are porifera? Characteristics?
- Porifera=Sponges
- Suspension feeders
- Hermaphrodites
What is cleavage?
Mitotic cell divisions without cell growth, results in blastula.
What is gastrulation?
Layers of embryonic germ tissue that form tissues and organs are produced.
Characteristics of a diploblast?
- Two germ layers: Ectoderm (outer) and endoderm (inner)
Characteristics of eumetazoa?
- Radial symmetry
- Single opening for nutrients
What are the two forms of Cnidarians?
- Polyp (e.g. sea anemone)
- Medusa (e.g. Jellyfish)
What is bilateral symmetry?
One axis of symmetry
What is a triploblast?
An organism with all three germ layers: Ectoderm, Endoderm, Mesoderm
Differences between protostome and deuterostome?
Protostome: Spiral, determinate, mesoderm cells split to form coelom
Deuterostome: Radial and indeterminate, Coelom forms as mesoderm grows and folds outward, blastopore becomes anus.
Acoelomates, Pseudocoelomates, coelomates?
Acoelomates: Lack cavity
Pseudocoelomates: Real cavity, but formed between mesoderm and endoderm.
Coelomates: True coelom from mesoderm forming structures that suspend internal organs.
