Lecture 8 - Animation Flashcards
Frames per Second (FPS)
Movie
TV
Computer
Movie: 24 fps
TV: 30 fps
Computer: 12-15 fps
In animation, does each frame overlap the previous one?
YES
Sampling Process
Each frame is made up of discrete samples where each sample is a pixel.
More samples = better quality and larger file size
Quantization Process
Each pixel gets assigned a colour
Frame Rate
The playback speed of the animation in frames per second (fps)
What are the two types of 2-D animation?
- Cel Animation
2. Path Animation
Cel (Celluloid) Animation
A transparent sheet where images are hand drawn by movie animators.
The background remains constants as the cel moves.
First Cel animated movie was in 1937, Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs
Path Based Animation
Keyframes: having starting/ending points for an object and a path to follow
Tweening
The process of a computer generating the frames in between the keyframes or starting/ending points
How do you speed up the animation?
- Reduce number of frames
2. Increase the frame rate (ie 8 fps to 12 fps)
How to slow down the animation?
- Add more frames but KEEP THE FRAME RATE THE SAME
2. Lower the frame rate but KEEP THE SAME AMOUNT OF FRAMES
Onion Skinning
A 2D computer graphics term for a technique used in creating animated cartoons and editing movies to see several frames at once.
Rotoscoping
An animation technique for combining cartoon figures and realistic images
3D Animation as 3 sections
Modeling: defining the objects 3D shape
Animating: process of defining the objects movement
Rendering: give objects attributes
Morphing
Process of blending together two images into a series of images
