Once you have created a website on your hard drive and you need to get it up onto the Web, what is it called?
Publishing
What does publishing your website entail?
Involves transferring the webpage files to the web server
FTP Software
An internet standard that allows you to upload and download files with other computers on the internet
NOT all FTP software can connect to a web server
What are the 4 pieces of information needed for publishing a website?
- Host name
- Username
- Password
- Port Number
Two basic types of searches you can perform on the World Wide Web, what are they?
- Search Engines

What software do Search Engines use?
Spiders and Webcrawlers
How does Google work?
- Gathers the information (through GoogleBot or a “Spider”)
- Builds a database (ie an index, assigns an index number to each page)
- Rank results (most arrows pointing to it)
PageRank evaluates two things:
- How many links there are to a web page from other pages
- More links to it, more important (quality of the linking sites)
Ranks webpages NOT websites
What are the 3 things to make your website more visible?
- Text
- Links
- Popularity
Title Tag (Property Title)
Considered the most important text by all search engines.
- it is shown as the link for all returned results
- text shown when people bookmark your site
What is a Hit?
A Hit = the number of graphics on a page + the actual page itself
What was the first tool for searching the internet?
Archie in 1990
When was the World Wide Web created and by who?
It was created in 1991 by Tim Burners-Lee
