Lecture 8 Flashcards
What side if the radius on?
“thumb side”
wider at wrist
What side if the ulna on?
“pinky side”
has olecrenon at elbow
Radius - proximal end
going from top to bottom –>
head, neck, radial tuberosity
Radius - distal end
ulnar notch on medial side
styloid process on lateral side
Ulna - proximal end
olecranon - trochlear notch - radial notch - coronoid process
Ulna - distal end
head - styloid process (bump on medical (pinky side) of wrist
what does the radius do?
stabalizes wrist joint
Fibrous radioulnar ligaments (3)
interosseous membrane, annular ligament, radioulnar ligament
What is the interosseous membrane? (3)
- fibrous sheath
- seperates forearm muscles into anterior and posterior compartments
- connects radius and ulna
what is the annular ligament? (5)
- proximal ligament
- thick band surrounding head of radius
- connects radius with radial notch of ulna
- proximal radioulnar joint
- flexiblity allows for pronation and supination
what si the radioulnar ligament? (3)
- distal ligament
- stabalizers
- distal radioulnar joint
what are the three bone catagories of the hand/wrist? from wrist to finger tips
carpals - metacarpals - phalanges
What is the saying to help remember the bones of the wrist
So long to pinky here comes the thumb
carpals - proximal row (bottom) - lateral to medial
scaphoid -> lunate -> triquetrum (closest to outside of hand) -> pisiform
carpals - distal row (top) - medial to lateral
hamate (hook fo hamate) -> capitate -> trapezoid -> trapezium (thumb one)
which carpals/features of carpals can you not see formt he dorsal view of hand? (2)
hook of hamate and pisiform
wrist joints (2)
radiocarpal joint, ulnocarpal joint
Radiocarpal joint (3)
- synovial ellipsoid joint
- radius articulates with scaphoid, lunate and triquetrium
- only articular component of the wrsit joint
ulnocarpal joint (3)
- ulna connects with lunate and triquetrum (pinky side)
- no direction of articulation
- common site of wrist injuries
Metacarpals (3)
- numbered 1-5 (thumb to pinky)
- carpometacarpal joints (proximal/bottom)
- metacarpal phalngeal joint (distal/top)
Phalanges (4)
- proximal interphalangeal joint
- distal interphalngeal joints
- seperated into proximal phalanx, middle phalanx and distal phalanx
- thumb only has proximal and distal phalanges
Joints of the hand going from bottom of hand (not wrist) to finger tips (4)
carpometacarpal –> metacarpophalangeal –> proximal interphalangeal –> distal interphalangeal (thumb does not have distal interphalangeal joint)
