Lecture 7: Nutrition Animal Needs Flashcards
How does the egg get its nutrients and from where?
- embryo develops in egg without external sources of nutrients
- energy source is mostly from the yolk (lipids, carbs, lipoproteins from the liver)
- protein source is from albumen (egg white) and egg yolk (amino acids)
- vitamins water and minerals come from yolk (liposoluble) albumen (water soluble) and shell (calcium)
- formation of yolk sac produces digestive enzymes
- Allantois - embryonic bladder (waste secretion)
- amnion - physical protection of embryo
- use calcium from shell for embryos skeleton
Where does all of embryos nutrients come from?
Mother, which goes to egg (important to have proper nutrition)
What does the hen pass down to egg other than nutrients?
Antibodies (passive immunity) - immunoglobulins
How long can chicks survive on the residual yolk sac?
1 week
What type of feed, water and light do newborn chicks need?
- early access to feed and water
- photoschedule is 20-24 intermittent light hrs to encourage eating and then slowly decreased
- feed: energy (fat, carbs), Amino Acids, vitamins A, D (calcium absorption), E, Minerals, Phosporus and Calcium
Which 9 Amino acids do poultry need?
Arginine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, valine
What does the membrane do in the white of the egg?
Releases digestive enzymes, and maintains the shape
What happens when chicks are hatched?
They are transported to the farm within 1-2 days of birth
Birds dont eat if they dont have access to ______
Water
