Lecture 7 Cytoplasmic Organelles Flashcards
Cytoplasm
Portion of the cell between the nucleus and plasma membrane, including the membrane-bound organelles
Cytosol
After you have removed the organelles from the cytoplasm.
Portion of the cell between the nucleus and the plasma membrane exclusive of the membrane-bound organelles
Rough ER
A system of basophilic, membrane bound, interconnected tubules and flattened compartments within the cytosol studded on its cytsolic surface with ribosomes
Rough ER Function
Protein synthesis
-for proteins that are to be secreted outside the cell or targeted to the ER, Golgi or plasma membrane
Protein and lipid trafficking
Lipid synthesis occurs in association with the cytosolic leaflet of the ER
Translocation to the luminal leaflet requires flippases
Transport of lipid to the cell membrane and to most organelles occurs through vesicular transport
Phospholipid is transferred from the ER to mitochondria and peroxisomes by phospholipid transfer (exchange) proteins.
