Lecture 7 Flashcards
What is process of bone growth?
Bones begin as a catalogue model and then
transformed into bone in the process called ossification.
What are the different parts of a growing bone?
Primary ossification centre:
> Diaphysis
Secondary ossification centre:
> Epiphysis
Growth plate:
> between diaphysis and epiphysis
called the epiphyseal growth plate
Bone pathology
Imbalance of Osteoblasts and Osteoclasts activity.
e.g. Osteoporosis the Osteoclasts overtake the Osteoblasts, results in thin & porous compact bone, loss of volume in cancellous bone, compression fractures in vertebrae.
What are the causes of osteoporosis?
Age - loss of oestrogen Life Factors > lack of exercise > nutrition > peak bone mass - bone as a bank
What are the stages of a fracture?
Stage One
> Haematoma
> Capillaries
> Phagocytes
Stage Two > Fibroblasts > Chondroblasts > Chondro = cartialge > Fibrocartilaginous callus
Stage Three
> Bone callus
> Osteoblasts
Stage Four
> Remodelling
