Lecture 7 Flashcards
Perceptual moment
smallest perceptual unit of time (25-250 ms), determined by short term biological clock (regulates body’s metabolic rate and affects sense of passage of time)
Basal Ganglia
via dopamine production modulates time perception (agonists – activate receptors – speed up time perception; neuroleptics (antagonists) – slow down passage of time)
Cerebellum
timing of motor task
Prefrontal cortex
expected duration, anticipation
Information storage theory
Ornstein; perceived time duration based on contents of one’s memory – the amount of information picked up consciously and stored in memory determines the perceived amount of time
Information storage size theory
number, complexity, and efficiency of coding and storage influence the amount of information that must be processed and determines perception of time (so, more events in an interval = + processing demands = + perceived duration of interval)
Biological clock
Stop watch, wristwatch, calendar
