Construction of questions Misleading Questions/information
Loaded question: offering somthing in the question to hint at what you want

Leading questions: leading specificity to answers
Avoid: order effects/ Priming
make sure order is randomized

ex. Response set responding because of beliefs Democrats only voting for Democrats
ex Social desirability bias: saying what you think you’re supposed to say
Solution: use social desirability scale

Response engagement techniques
Must keep engaged if you want good data
Start with interesting questions first
Mix Question types: alternate between open-ended and rating scales
Visuals: include images or icons for interest
Survey length and completion rates
Ideally: 10–15 minutes
Only include necessary questions
Pilot testing and revision
Pilot testing benefits: Detects issues in clarity, question flow
Feedback mechanism: use small groups to catch unclear questions
Revisions: Adjust based on feedback images or icons for intrest
Confidentiality
- Anonymity options: Allow participants to skip questions (no personal information)
Confidentiality: Extra care for sensitive subjects
Clear subject information
Framing questions in a way that isn’t judgmental be respectful and neutral
Cultural sensitivity
Avoid culturally biased language
- Reading level (accessible for all)
- Language options: offer translation where possible
