pharyngeal involuntary
esophageal involuntary
what are some signs and symptoms of swallowing challenges in Peds?

what are some diagnostic tests for swallowing challenges?

fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing
what is a barium x ray?
drinking a barium solution which coats the inside of the esophagus so the Dr can see changes in the shape and movement of muscles in the esophagus on the x ray
what is videofluroscopic swallow study?
an x ray study the subject swallows barium mixed with food/liquid. then x rays are taken of the food and barium combination as it enters the oral cavity and travels into the esophagus
what is fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing
an endoscopist passes a thin and flexible tube passes down the nose and throat
what are some OPIs associated with feeding?
difficulty coordination suck, swallow, breathe
lack of head/trunk control affecting independent sitting
delayed fine motor skills impacting self feeding
what are some examples of interventions for feeding?
parent education
positioning, adaptive equipment or adaptive strategies
modification of food and liquid textures that are easier and safer to swallow
what is another intervention option for feeding?
sugical- tubes
