Lecture 6 Flashcards
what is sensation?
information about our external and internal environment
what region of the brain detects emotion and threat?
the limbic system
what makes a response to stimulus context specific?
bidirectional connection between limbic structures and thalamus
what is sensory integration?
the organization of sensation by the brain for use in everyday life
what is over reactivity?
a reaction is greater than expected, impacting function
what is under reactivity?
a reaction is less than expected, impacting function
what might over reactivity look like?
avoidance, unexplained distress, covering eyes/ears, gagging
what might under reactivity look like?
not making it to the bathroom in time, uses reminders/schedules
what is perception?
identify, distinguish, interpret sensory information
what might perception difficulties look like?
avoidance or distress
postural differences
use of too much/too little force
what is praxis?
planning, organizing and executing a goal-directed movement
what might praxis difficulties look like?
avoidance or distress
poor sequencing
difficulty with two handed tasks
doing things differently
what are the 3 components of praxis?
- ideation (an idea of what I’d like to do)
- motor planning (how do I do this new thing)
- execution (actually doing it)
what is the development of sensory integration?
prenatal- sensation emerging, preparing for occupations
infancy- matured sensation, increasing participation
childhood- increasing complexity, increasing independence
what are some general tips for paediatric practice?
familiarize yourself with their interests
practice interacting in different ways
prepare to play on the floor or prepare the space so you can be at their level in another way
