Lecture 7 Flashcards
What is the most essential nutrient for life?
Water
6 Functions of water
Temperature regulation
Transport of nutrients and waste products
Chemical reactions
Cushioning of organs
Lubrication
Transport of sight and sound
WHy is a high water percentage in muscle and a low water percentage in fat relevant?
Muscle is a cheap source of weight gain and young animals put muscle on first
As animal gets closer to market it starts to deposit fat tissues which weigh less than muscle
3 sources of water
Drinking water
Water contained in feed
Metabolic water
What is a feed source high in water content?
Silage
is there typically a storage of water in the body
No
For main anatomical sources of water loss
Kidneys (urine)
Skin (perspiration)
Lungs (water vapor)
Intestine (feces)
What is roughly the water consumption to feed consumption?
3X water consumpotion to feed consumption
What affect does hummidity have on water intake?
When high increase of water intake
Affect of cold water
Animal will reduce intake of water due to cost of heating water metabolically
7 Symptoms of water deprivation
Reduce feed intake
Increased heart rate
Increased body temp
Increased respiration
Lack of muscle coordination
Eyes are sunken and skin is shrivelled
Death
What is wrong with high sulphate content in water
Sulphate ties up trace minerals, ie copper, and wont be available for animal
What is hard water mainly related to?
Calcium and magnesium salts
What can use of hard water do?
May upset calcium/phosphorus ratio, resulting in leg problems
